Emergency exit signage is more than just a compliance requirement — it plays a critical role in protecting lives during an emergency evacuation.
According to SANS 10400-T:2020, buildings must have clearly identified and accessible escape routes to ensure occupants can evacuate safely and effectively.
✅ If the nearest escape door is less than 45 meters from all working areas, only ONE escape route is generally required.
✅ If the nearest escape door is more than 45 meters from the furthest point, at least TWO escape routes are required.
Exit routes should always:

🔹 Use approved photoluminescent signage
🔹 Display the SABS logo and SANS 1186-5 compliance mark
🔹 Remain visible during power failures
🔹 Be securely fixed as permanent fixtures
🔹 Lead to exit doors that can open with a single push motion
Buildings where people gather — such as malls, entertainment centres, cinemas, sports facilities, hospitals, and care centres — must also install internally illuminated exit lights with battery backup systems to ensure visibility during power outages.
